FAQ's

What does treatment include?

Wearing safety eye wear to protect the technician and client’s eyes from the laser light during the procedure. A small hand piece will be used that touches the skin to deliver the laser light. A light spray of coolant onto the skin will be felt just before each laser pulse. A test spot or area can be done prior to full treatment to see how skin reacts. Most patients experience little discomfort at the treatment site because of the dynamic cooling device.

How long does it take?

The procedure can take as little as ten minutes or up to an hour, depending on the area treated.

Will my skin show any signs of treatment?

It is completely normal for your treated skin to appear pink or red within 30 minutes of treatment; this may last from a few hours to several days and is relieved with the application of ice or cooling gels. On very rare occasions, minor blistering or scabbing may occur and this reaction is also normal for some individuals. If they do occur, contact SouthWest Aesthetic Services for instructions.

Will hair continue to grow after treatment?

It is completely normal for hair to continue to grow after your laser hair removal treatment. Some of these hairs are being expelled from the newly disabled treated follicles, and some are from dormant follicles entering their active phase after the laser hair removal treatment. This normal cyclical nature of hair growth is why the full Hair Removal Protocol consists of a recommended six to eight laser hair removal treatments per area, scheduled four to eight weeks apart.

How does Laser Hair Removal work?

Laser Hair Removal is a faster, gentler way to remove unwanted hair, with great results. Laser Hair Removal applies precisely controlled pulses of energy (electrical and light, with cooling), reaching into the hair follicles that lie beneath the skin. The energy heats the hair, right down to the bottom of the root, destroying it without damaging surrounding tissue or skin.

What does laser hair removal feel like?

Each pulse, which lasts less than a second, produces a slight tingling feeling. In particularly sensitive areas, such as the upper lip, it may feel like a quick, light pinch.

What are the side effects of laser hair removal?

Most people experience no side effects at all, though few exhibit some short-term local reddening of the surrounding skin and in rare cases scabbing can occur. If you are feeling any discomfort after the procedure, we advise clients to use ice or cooling gels. You can return to your regular activities immediately after laser hair removal treatment, although it is advisable to keep the skin protected from exposure to direct sunlight for a short period of time.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

Because our laser hair removal technology only destroys hair follicles that are in the active growth phase, multiple treatments will be necessary. The number of treatments required also depends upon other factors including but not limited to skin color, hair color, and coarseness of hair. Normally, a series of six to eight laser hair removal treatments (with each treatment every 4-6 weeks) is recommended for best results.  However, all skin types are different and you may require more or less than six treatments.

Who performs laser hair removal?

All laser treatments are performed by a thoroughly trained professional. Our owners are the technicians performing the procedures and we have been trained by the same person who trains most of the plastic surgeons and dermatologists and their staff in Tulsa, OKC, Wichita, and surrounding communities. Each technician is extensively trained before performing any treatments. Additionally, a licensed medical doctor serves as a medical consultant and is available for any needs that may arise. The state of Oklahoma does not require a medical doctor on-site and because SWAS does not have one on-site during clinics, we are able to offer our clients amazing prices without ever compromising safety. We are constantly consulting with Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists to make sure we are up to date on all of the best practices with both lasers.

What types of hair color and skin color can be treated with laser hair removal?

While laser hair removal can be performed on virtually any skin color and hair type, hair color is the most important factor. The light emitted from the laser is attracted to the melanin, or dark pigment, in the hair follicle. This means that dark hair is treated most effectively. Treatments performed on red, blonde, and gray hair are not generally as effective. Our multiple laser modalities allow us great versatility for accommodating the wide variance in hair and skin color.

How is laser hair removal different from electrolysis hair removal?

Laser hair removal is much faster. Electrolysis hair removal requires more time because it’s a process that treats only one hair at a time, whereas laser hair removal treats many hairs per every laser pulse. Laser hair removal for an area like the underarms for example can be treated in only 5-10 minutes.

What type of equipment do you use?

We use the Candela GentleLASE System. Its revolutionary long-pulse high energy alexandrite laser emits a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where it is absorbed. The laser energy is transformed into heat, which destroys the hair follicle leaving the surrounding skin unaffected. The skin is further protected during treatment by a patented skin-cooling device. Candela’s Dynamic Cooling Device™ sprays cryogen onto the skin cooling the upper layers and providing patients with increased comfort. The GentleLASE selectivity helps protect the skin, while effectively treating the unwanted hair.

Is the Alexandrite laser the best choice for my skin and hair?

The Alexandrite laser is considered by many in the field of laser hair removal to be the gold standard laser. The Alexandrite laser uses a longer wavelength for penetration to the hair follicle and energy that is particularly attracted to melanin – the target for hair removal.

What are the risks of hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a lunch time procedure. There is no recovery time. Patients can return to work or play immediately. These lasers do not remove skin, so the risks are very low. As with any procedure, we have an informed consent that explains all the possible risks.

How old do you have to be for laser hair removal?

There really is no age limit. Anyone under the age of 18 will require parental consent. Young people that are not finished growing will develop new hair as they grow, and will require touch ups to maintain the results.

Is it painful?

People have compared it to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Compared to waxing the treatment has very little discomfort. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different. If you feel like you may be more comfortable with a numbing cream, we ask that you have your physician write the prescription for you.
